Classic Showdown: Engineer versus Marketer

During university I took a subject which focuses on engineers and the society surrounding it. I couldn't help but made fun at certain "facts" about engineers. According to soceity, engineers are square, boring, study freaks, no-social-life sort of people. It's a shame what other people thinks of you whenever they ask what did you major in in your studies.

Marketers on the other hand are the total opposites of engineers. Flexible, creative, study-only-what-they-need-to people.

Anyhow it would be fun just to compare the two:

Now an engineer would somehow look like what you see on the side (in reality it would most probably be a man. I had only two girls in my class of a hundred!). An engineer would most probably laugh hysterically at this joke:

"Three engineering students were gathered together discussing the possible designers of the human body.

One said, "It was a mechanical engineer. Just look at all the joints." Another said, "No, it was an electrical engineer. The nervous system has many thousands of electrical connections."

The last said, "Actually it was a civil engineer. Who else would run a toxic waste pipeline through a recreational area?''

A marketer would look like one of those in the picture at the side of this. All dressed up in fancy clothes with a face brimming with confidence. A marketer joke would somehow look something like this:

"A couple was spending a romantic night celebrating their wedding anniversary that ended in the bedroom.

The next morning her friend asks the wife, "How was it?" She answers, "Well that’s the downside or marrying a marketer.”.

”We didn't actually do anything but he sat on the bed all night telling me how good it was going to be!"

(It's only a fictional humorous perception of what I think they are, so don't get angry)

The two characters are directly contradicting one another. It sometimes seems impossible how the two can actually work together or understand one anothers lingo especially in these times where all successful industries call for all marketers to think like an engineer and all engineers to have a mind of a marketer.

All I know is this generation of consumers wouldn’t buy a product solely designed by an engineer (because it would look square and boring) nor would they buy something that looks-nice-at-first but detested by its functionality. Where would the balance strike? Or is a balance required in the first place?

I can only imagine if the balance is struck:

It’s gonna be sooooo cool!
